Boost Your Workouts

March 26, 2013 - Dr. Greg Walsh

Sanibel is one of those towns where you can pop on a pair of running shoes or take the bike out of the garage and travel almost anywhere you would like on the island. From the historic lighthouse on the east end all the way to the border of Captiva, the spacious and properly maintained bike paths provide a convenience and opportunity that few places can match.

Making sure that you are dressed properly for such activity can go a long way in preventing injury. I wanted to share some information on a new technology that adidas has been working on with the intention of creating less impact on your body and more spring in your step for runners and walkers.

Most running shoes utilize a material called EVA foam which makes up the bulk of the “cushion” beneath your feet. Running shoes have been using EVA foam for years and until now, there has never been a real effort to find a worthy replacement. Adidas’ new technology is called Boost and early tests are showing that their shoes are reducing the amount of impact in participant’s knees as well as the energy exerted with every step. Unlike EVA foam, adidas is also claiming that Boost will not suffer in extremely hot and cold conditions.

The company's early goal is to focus Boost exclusively on running shoes and limit their availability to the adidas website and specialty stores focused on running. In the next few years, we should be seeing Boost material in everything from walking shoes to basketball trainers. Early reviews on the technology by running sites have been nothing but positive so it looks like the company’s lofty claims are proving to be true. Only time will tell, but adidas may have taken a big step in the evolution of footwear.
