Youngsters have fun with flamingos at Captiva library

July 16, 2009

Last Saturday, as part of the Lee County Library System's "Be Creative @ Your Library" summer program, the Captiva Memorial Library invited papier-mache expert and island favorite DiVitto Kelly back for another fun summer art project.

Last year it was clown fish and, in years past, a variety of sea creatures. But this time, Captiva kids and visitors were given the opportunity to make their very own neon pink flamingos.

Kelly, a reference librarian in Hollywood, Fla., brought along art teacher wife Andrea and their two children, Ronan and Fiona.

Andrea, DiVitto, Fiona and Ronan Kelly are from Hollywood, Fla., where DiVitto works as a reference librarian and Andrea works as an art teacher. The Kelly family has a time share on Captiva and have been coming to the island every summer for the past seven years to teach art programs at the Captiva Memorial Library.

Inspirational sources ran the gammut at the library, as some of these young artists were inspired by their favorite movies and television programs, while others prefered to go a more realistic route.

"I wanted it to look like a real flamingo. Daddy helped me with the tail," said Summer Smiciklas of Boca Raton.

The final 2009 summer program - "Get Magically Creative @ Your Library" with Brent Gregory - will take place on Thursday, July 23 at 3 p.m.

In addition, there is still a reading incentive program - complete with prizes - going on in the Captiva Library.

The Captiva Memorial Library is located at 11560 Chapin Lane.
