Q & A with resident beauty expert Kay Casperson

September 21, 2010
By JANE BRICKLEY, jbrickley@breezenewspapers.com
Casperson is the owner and operator of the Kay Casperson Lifestyle Spa and Boutique in Chadwick’s Square. In addition to developing her own line of natural skin care products and cosmetics, Casperson is also a mom, wife and active participant in both island communities.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Maplewood, Minnesota just outside of the twin cities.

What was your favorite hobby/activity/thing to do when you were little?

I loved sports, going up to the cabin, swimming, water skiing and making my friends look beautiful.

How did you end up on Sanibel/Captiva?

I first came to Captiva for a visit with friends and eventually my visits turned into longer and longer trips until I became a full time resident. I realized that you don't really have to leave paradise if you don't want to. I have managed to make my career and family life all work really well here! If I need to be on the road, it's an easy trip to the airport, but with technology, most things can be done right where you are.

What's your family like?

I have a wonderful husband, who is also a great daddy to my two beautiful little girls. We have a beautiful Tibetan Terrier named Tucker who is also a lot of fun! We have tons of fun together and are very involved with the community in terms of organizations and social activities. We love both Islands and have been a big part of them for many years.

You have a unique philosophy when it comes to beauty. Will you share some of your secrets with us?

I believe the secret to really being truly beautiful is to find a happy balance between inner and outer beauty. For example, you really need to love WHO you are first and fix something if you don't like it. Then, when you look in the mirror, your flaws will seem minimal! It is what I call finding the delicate balance and discovering "Beauty Inside Out." It is much easier to fix something on the outside —the inside takes a little more effort and thought...but the results are amazing!

What's the one beauty product that you absolutely can't live without?

That is a tough question! I don't think I could live without my Cleanser called “Remove.” It cleanses better than anything I have ever tried — and the affirmation on the bottle encourages you to identify and remove negativity from your life! We all need to do this on a daily basis or things can creep in through people, thoughts, environment etc. It’s a must-have product for me!

When you're not helping women — and men — look and feel their best, what do you like to do?

I love to take pictures and videos of my family. Every moment is so precious and I always feel that time goes so fast. I want to capture every moment that I can! I also love to research and write about things that I want to launch or add as extensions to my business. We are always doing something for or with the community — whether it’s participating in a fundraiser, a school function or a community event...it's all fun and meaningful!

You're many things — an entrepreneur, inventor, philanthropist, life coach, family woman — which role brings you the most joy?

Every aspect of my life brings me great joy! Each facet is a part of me and what makes me who I am! The part that makes it the most interesting is balancing them all! It is, again, a delicate balance to be successful as a person in all areas of your life. God gave us gifts and talents and it is up to us to make them all work and work well. I learned a very important lesson along my journey, and that is that happiness and joy come from within and if you rely on other things to make you happy, it will never happen! I am blessed to be doing what I love, living where I love and being with people that I love —THAT is living a beautiful life!

What's something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I was adopted when I was a baby by wonderful Minnesota family, who had adopted four other children as well.

You are always smiling! What's the key to leading a happy life?

You should always strive to be with who you love, love what you do and live where you feel good!
