Move into the 21st century

October 20, 2010

To the editor,

Fort Myers is one of the worst cities for transportation that I have ever been in! With only one freeway going north to south, no east-to-west cross freeways, few overpasses and bike lanes, and no city center, we are the epitome of urban sprawl at its worst!

The sprawl is done, so we must look to better options for public transportation. Our local government should be looking into ways to benefit from Obama's plan for investing $50 billion in transportation upgrades. It would not only reduce our traffic and pollution problems at a local level, it will help to reduce our global footprint and create needed jobs to boost our failing local economy.

City planners should be looking at ways to create better, more efficient public transportation to our various malls, shopping centers and schools. A raised "El" system that runs primarily on wind and solar energy would allow for open nature corridors, reduce carbon emissions and provide a much needed system of transportation for our city and its surrounding communities.

It's time we moved into the 21st century and stop being held hostage by the big oil and fossil fuel companies.
