Sanibel Island Fishing Club to conduct first meeting of 2011

January 6, 2011
Special to the REPORTER

This coming Tuesday, Jan. 11, the Sanibel Island Fishing Club will be holding it’s monthly meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the north room of the Sanibel Community House, located at 2173 Periwinkle Way. The featured speaker will begin his presentations at 7 p.m. sharp. There is no admission charge for the event and the angling public is cordially invited to attend.

This month's featured speaker is Mike Campbell, Senior Environmental Specialist with Lee County Division of Marine Natural Resources. He will be giving a PowerPoint presentation entitled, "The Past, Present and Future of Lee County's Artificial Reefs."

Campbell will be discussing the current status of the dozens of Lee County reefs, including reef fish populations, conditions and locations. He will also talk about future plans to create inshore and near-shore artificial reefs in collaboration with SCCF and other environmental organizations that will be created out of discarded oyster shells. Additional future reef plans include a nine-square-mile Marine Protected Area (MPA) that will be established for a long-term study of goliath grouper and other common Gulf of Mexico species.

Anyone interested in artificial reefs and the fishes most commonly found on them should plan to attend this fascinating presentation. For additional information about Lee Counties artificial reef program and GPS coordinates to these reefs, go www.lee-county.com/gov/dept/NaturalResources/ Marine/Pages/Artificial_Reefs or e-mail Mike at mncampbell@leegov.com.

The Sanibel Island Fishing Club meets monthly through season and sponsors several group outings as well as lending support for various fishing related charities and organizations such as START, PURRE and the Sanibel Sea School.

For additional information on joining the club, please contact Rol Campbell at 472-8994 or attend next Tuesday’s meeting. The Sanibel Island Fishing Club has been an active social club on the islands for more than 20 years.
