Last week, the Lee Memorial Health System Foundation announced that veteran pitcher and long-time fan favorite Tim Wakefield will take the reins as Honorary Chair of the 18th Annual Boston Red Sox Children's Hospital Celebrity Classic golf tournament, being held at The Forest Country Club in South Fort Myers on Feb. 25, and the family-fun Boston Red Sox Children's Hospital Diamond Dinner, being held on March 7 at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers.
The 44-year-old Wakefield has been a loyal supporter over many years of The Boston Red Sox efforts on behalf of The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. He is always on hand to greet fans, sign autographs and put in a highly competitive day on the course as a single handicap golfer.
Wakefield was the recipient of the prestigious 2010 Roberto Clemente Humanitarian Award from Major League Baseball. The Roberto Clemente award is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who "best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual's contribution to his team," as voted on by baseball fans and members of the media.
The Boston Red Sox Children's Hospital Celebrity Event Series is strengthened by a dollar-for-dollar match to all funds raised and will help fund an expansion of The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. The Children's Hospital expansion will provide extensive medical subspecialty treatments and state-of-the-art lifesaving care for the children of Southwest Florida.
The golf tournament will take place on Feb. 25 on the championship-level courses at The Forest Country Club in South Fort Myers. The golf event is preceded the evening before (Feb. 24) by The Boston Red Sox Children's Hospital "Tee Party."
This year's "Tee Party" will feature a Parisian theme and is set to be an outstanding evening of heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and spirited silent and live auctions. Bidding opportunities will include one-of-a-kind hand-signed memorabilia from the world of sports and entertainment, luxurious spa and jewelry items, a trip to Napa Valley with private vintner tour and the Grande Finale: a seven-day trip to Paris and Prague.
"We are honored to have Tim Wakefield serve as Honorary Chair of our 2011 Boston Red Sox Children's Hospital Celebrity Event Series," said Sharon A. MacDonald, Lee Memorial Health System Chief Foundation Officer. "His support, along with his team members and the entire Boston Red Sox Organization, bring outstanding awareness to the health and wellness issues of the children in our community. We are grateful to the unending support of The Boston Red Sox and the members of The Forest Country Club in helping us to achieve our funding goals. It is our mission to make sure our community's children receive the highest quality medical care available."
