Dozen entries will be screened at 2011 Filmmakers Showcase

March 9, 2011
Special to the REPORTER

Where else on Sanibel will you find a sparkling red carpet display, complete with movie stars and glamorous couples – all on their way to view some great films to be presented by local artists?

Rusty Farst, a Sanibel filmmaker is collaborating with BIG ARTS to bring a film-screening showcase of local filmmakers to Sanibel. Farst’s vision is to provide an opportunity for local artists to show off their work, to create a memorable event and allow the audience an opportunity to share their thoughts on the films.

The Filmmakers Showcase will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at BIG ARTS' Schein Performance Hall between 1 and 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The window display, located at the Bailey’s Center on the corner of Tarpon Bay Road and Periwinkle Way, was created by Farst to help promote the event. Everyone should have no trouble spotting it between Nick’s Frozen Yogurt and the Sanibel Shell. Glamorous guests and fun props line the red carpet as they make their way to the Filmmakers Showcase.

Come out to see it at night, complete with flashing lights and cameras. Don’t forget to take some pictures of yourself with the stars and e-mail them to ida@hillgate.biz to be featured on our blogs and websites.

“I encourage everyone to take some time and check out the display as you make plans to attend this event,” said Farst. “We have many talented filmmakers and we are really looking forward to creating a fun atmosphere for everyone involved.”

The screening will feature 12 short films:

• "Sanibel’s Crocodile" by Janie Howland and Dee Searage Century from SCCF

• "Puerto Rico" by Pierce Hobbs

• "Luminary Award to Sam and Francis Bailey" by Hodges University

• "The Musical Brain" by Christina Pochmursky

• "Kinetoscope" by Gerard Damiano

• "Dear Baseball: I Love You" by David E. Carter

• "Stand By Me" by Connie Bottinelli

• "Birds of Sanibel" by Kenneth Burgener

• "Goliaths" by Rusty Farst

• "The Right Friend" by Gail Kowatch

• "Street Vendor Wars" by Zachary B. Riley

• "The Hope Hospice Chronicles" by Mark Myers

All films were produced by Southwest Florida residents and do not exceed one hour in running time. There will be discussion following each film.

Lots of entertainment and fun has been scheduled for this special occasion. Leoma Lovegrove will paint Rusty Farst in a Shark Cage “Out Loud.” They are promising a show that has never before been experienced on Sanibel Island, complete with lights and music.

Fred Astaire Dance Studios will be presenting Maureen Valiquette and Russell Perkins, who will perform the Cha-cha-cha. The pair was named the People’s Choice Winners at the 2011 Dancing with the Islands’ Stars.

Also, Steve Farst will perform solo guitar and vocals throughout the day’s activities. The Calendar Girls will be there to perform their dance routine and Mark Meyers will make a Fit4Life presentation.

Rusty Farst has been an underwater videographer for more than 15 years. He has been on several underwater cave explorations for the National Geographic, and has been assisting the Lee County Natural Resources Division for almost 10 years by filming and documenting the artificial reefs placed in local waters. In addition to cave exploration, Rusty has been an independent filmmaker who is passionate about filming Sanibel Island.
