Henry Shelton

Henry James Shelton, a long-time resident of Sanibel, passed away on March 5, 2011 at the age of 96.



A native of Chicago, Ill., he was a successful small business owner and sales executive. He moved with his wife, Dorothy, to Sanibel in 1978. As a resident of Sanibel, he was active in many civic and political organizations. He played an instrumental role in establishing the Sanibel Senior Center (Center4Life) by lobbying the city to provide better services to seniors. He helped establish the Sanibel chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), which he served as president in 1983 and 1984. It became one of the finest AARP chapters in Florida. He later served as Congressional District Coordinator for AARP.



In 1987, he and Dorothy were appointed to Florida Silver-Haired Legislators by Governor Lawton Childes. The Silver-Haired Legislators is a state-wide organization that discusses the needs and issues of older Floridians. In 1990, he was appointed to the Area Agency on Aging. In 1995, he received a Certificate of Recognition for his contribution to older adults in southwest Florida by the agency. He received a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Sanibel in 1994 in recognition of his outstanding public service to the city.



He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Doolin Shelton. He is survived by his son, Dwight J. Shelton and Sara T. Shelton, daughter-in-law of Atlanta, Ga., grandchildren Elizabeth S. Lahurd (Michael) of Birmingham, Ala., grandson, Peter J. Shelton (Melinda) of Atlanta, and six great grandchildren, Katherine, Caroline and Emily Lahurd of Birmingham, and Emma, Benjamin and Anna Kate Shelton of Atlanta.
