Twenty-seven teams competed in the March 15 Member-Guest Tournament at Beachview Golf & Tennis Club. The format was two-man "shamble," with each golfer playing his own ball into the hole after choosing the better drive off the tee.
Marty Gallagher and his guest, Dan Valentine, won the tournament with a 21 under par score of 49. Valentine, a former Beachview member with good course knowledge, played from the gold tees and matched up well with Gallagher's steady game.
Members Dick Arnould and Chuck Bye finished second just one stroke back at 50. Arnould brought his precise short game to the gold tees and Bye, one of the longest hitters in the club, fired away from the whites. Third place went to New England seaman Ralph Barton and his guest, Don Simensen, with a score of 51.
In a nine-hole Pinehurst alternate shot format played after lunch, tournament director Jerry Mader and his guest, Terry Pokuta, finished first with a net score of 25.5. Jack Tukey and guest, Joe Miller, finished second one stroke behind. The 27-hole event was followed by cocktails, awards and dinner at Beachview Steakhouse and Seafood prepared by chef Mike Price.
Is it more than coincidence that all five Member-Guest winning teams included at least one golfer playing from the gold tees? Golf tee players sacrifice just three handicap strokes to play a course 669 yards shorter than the white tee course — 223 yards per stroke.
Some white tee players grumble that this is an unfair advantage, and the results in this case back them up. But there is no question that a shorter course makes the game more enjoyable for older or injured golfers and increases the overall level of competition.
In the March 12 Modified Stableford competition, first place went to Anthony Baldino, Bjorn Olsson, Guy Tober and Rene Lohser; second to Mike MacKay, Chuck Bye, Bill Blankenship and Dick Chocol; third to Jim Mulka, Bob Ritchlin, Bill Fetherston and Jerry Mader.
Also in the March 19 Two-Man Scramble competition, first place went to Fred Zimmer and Tom Golatzki @ 42.6; second to Jack Tukey and Bill Sartoris @ 48.6; third to Chuck Bye and Don Maurer @ 48.6.
Several of Beachview's 'regular' golfers, including, from left, Ginny O'Neil, Ann Marie Sprott and Barb Mulka, attended the annual Member-Guest Tournament held on March 15.
