Library offers trial for new financial databases

May 18, 2011
Submitted by CATHY CANGELOSI

The Sanibel Public Library is offering a trial of the new financial databases TheStreet and Weiss Ratings Online. The databases include a full line of products to help consumers and business professionals take the guesswork out of financial planning.

“Not only does this series give ratings for stocks and funds, it also gives ratings for banks and thrifts, health insurers, life and annuity insurers, property and casualty insurers, and bond and money market mutual funds," said Candy Heise, Reference Librarian. "I would like feedback on whether this would be a good addition to our list of permanent resources."

The trial is available at the Sanibel Public Library through the end of May. If there is enough interest from Library patrons, the Library will consider purchasing the databases. Please come in and see how easy it is to have this financial information right at your fingertips. Give your feedback on to our Reference Librarian. The trial is only available within the Library.

If the databases are purchased, remote access will also be available. Stop by the Reference Area and let us know what you think. Call 472-2483 for additional details.

The Sanibel Public Library is located at 770 Dunlop Road. Visit www.sanlib.org for more information.

Learn to speak 'Pirate!' at the SPL

Ahoy Mates! In anticipation of a certain upcoming movie premiere (we love you Captain Jack!) and a favorite random holiday, International Talk Like a Pirate Day, (celebrated every year on Sept. 19), the Sanibel Public Library is offering a special language course “Pirate!” through Mango Languages.

Aside from being fun to speak, Pirate is bold, colorful and easy to learn through the Mango languages online learning courses offered by the Sanibel Public Library. The 'ibrary is offering this course for a limited time.

The "Pirate!" language course is available at the Reference Area and TeenSpace computers at the Library through June 30. You can even use Mango with your home computer and headphones from home. Everyone loves pirates, so grab your friends and learn to speak Pirate!

Mango Languages for Sanibel Public Library has been part of library services for more than two years, providing online language learning in several languages including French, Spanish, Farsi, Portuguese, Japanese, Hebrew and many more.

Mango Languages was added to library services based on requests and comments from several library users needing foreign language lessons. A grant from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, Inc. provided the first year of the service.
