Sanibel Island is well-known for its active senior population. What is the secret to staying active well after retirement or even knee replacement surgery?

For more than 12 years, Physical Therapy of Sanibel has been providing quality rehabilitation services to islanders and visitors. For the past 8 years, physical therapist David Lackenby has been helping his patients with a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, neck and back pain, headaches and balance impairments, and has extensive experience with post-joint replacement rehabilitation.

"We provide a tailored exercise program not done at home," said Lackenby.

By using the adjustable Power Tower, a total-gym high-end commercial machine, his patients do squats to strengthen their legs because it is "critical they can get up from a seated position," said Lackenby

He also uses a pully system to help strengthen the hips, back and neck a cutting-edge exercise developed in Norway, which provides light resistance that can be brought directly to the patient's bedside. At Physical Therapy of Sanibel, it aims to provide exceptional, progressive and cost-effective rehabilitation services through personalized care that emphasizes fundamental independence for its patients.

"It's very lively in here," said Lackenby about the atmosphere of the clinic. "Kind of like the post office or local barbershop."

Lackenby has been a physical therapist for 20 years and trained in Manchester, U.K., where he earned his clinical specialty degree, and has also earned a master of manual therapy in Orlando. Until recently, he was a personal trainer and gym owner in Naples. Now he is 100 percent dedicated to providing physical therapy for a healthy recovery of his Sanibel patients.

"I like my job because I don't sit behind a desk," he said.

But physical therapy aid Lori Shuster added Lackenby has a way of reassuring his patients, making them feel safe and secure in a friendly environment. "He treats patients with good skillsit's art and science."

Physical therapists or PTs are described as health care professionals who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the elderly, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.

PTs examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

Physical therapists provide care for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes. State licensure is required in each state in which a physical therapist practices.

At Physical Therapy of Sanibel, Lackenby said he focuses on manipulation to help mobilize joints, along with manual therapy. Its web site states the privately-owned clinic is committed to a quick recovery so you can resume biking or shelling or any of your favorite activities the reason islanders and physicians have trusted Physical Therapy of Sanibel for all their physical therapy needs.

Additionally, physical therapist Heidi Weidner will be returning for a fourth season at Physical Therapy of Sanibel in December or January.

"She is our youngest snowbird," said Shuster. "We are looking forward to having her back."

Physical Therapy of Sanibel is located at 4301 Sanible-Captiva Rd., and can be reached at 395-1097.
