Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott, who is running for reelection, is the guest speaker for the next meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Republican Caucus on May 19 at the Sanibel Public Library, room #4.

The meeting, starting at 10:30 a.m., is open to the public.

Sheriff Scott started his law enforcement career as a Probation Officer and joined the Lee County Sheriff's Department in 1988. He was elected Sheriff in 2004. In 2005 he was honored by the Florida Crime Prevention Association with their President's Award.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement appointed Scott to co-chair the nine-county Southwest Regional Domestic Security Task Force in 2006. He was reelected in November 2008 and recently attended the FBI National Academy, where he was chosen to be the Graduation Speaker for his class.

Over the last few months the caucus has hosted a series of meetings to introduce candidates running for various offices in the upcoming primary election. One of the offices that does not draw a lot of attention, and therefore relatively unknown to voters, is the 20th Judicial Circuit of Florida, which includes Lee County. Judge George C. Richards and attorney David Lee McElrath, candidates for Circuit Court Judge in the 20th Judicial Circuit, are invited to speak as well.

Judge Richards currently serves as a criminal court judge in the 20th Judicial Circuit. Prior to that he served as Chief Assistant Statewide Prosecutor and earlier as an Assistant States Attorney in several districts in Florida.

McElrath is a private practice trial lawyer who works in the 20th Judicial Circuit, specializing in personal injury. He has been a member of the Florida Bar Association for 26 years and has an office in Naples.
