Sanibel Steakhouse changing inside and out

In just a few short weeks, Chip's Sanibel Steakhouse patrons are likely to notice changes taking place inside and out.

New general manager Kelsey Angstadt is wasting no time improving and upgrading everything from service to food quality and even the decor.

"I'm very excited about it," said Angstadt, who has worked a variety of positions in restaurants on the island for eight years. "We've changed the menu a little, not a lot, and making sure everything coming out of the kitchen is top notch, the best on Sanibel."

Changes are in the making for the wine list, the drink menu and subtle changes to the decor and exterior of the building located at 1473 Periwinkle Way.

Chip Durpo purchased the business about six years ago when there were additional steakhouse locations off the island. Those have been sold off leaving the island location the only one left. Durpo also owns the Fort Myers Beach Golf Course.

Angstadt, a Sanibel resident for seven years, became a server at Sanibel Steakhouse several months ago after about 18 months at the Mad Hatter. She named general manager in mid-April.

"It's my first GM position," said Angstadt, who holds a degree in psychology from Appalachian State University.

She describes herself as a hands-on manager, getting involved in all phases of the operation from making sure diners are pleased with their meal experience to clearing tables when necessary.

"There will be no cutting food quality to cut costs," Angstadt said.

Margarito Perez, who has worked at the restaurant for several years, was named executive chef last month with Dana Myers taking the roll of director of marketing and assistant manager.

Sanibel Steakhouse serves a dinner menu starting at 5 p.m. Lunch service is added during season. Live music by Michael Hearns is provided on Saturdays.

Menu items include soups, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, wraps, entrees featuring steak, prime rib, chops seafood, pastas, and deserts.
