Megan Brown, a fifth grader at the Sanibel School, has been awarded the Ben Carson Scholar Award bestowed by The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools.
The Foundation awards $1,000 scholarships to elementary students in fifth grade based on academic merit (3.75 GPA or higher), civic engagement and a nomination from their principal.
Brown and the other award recipients were honored at the annual Carson Scholars luncheon on May 19 at the Hyatt at Coconut Point.
One student is selected from each of the elementary schools in the Lee School District.
"Carson Scholars are some of the best and brightest students in Lee County," said Marshall T. Bower, Esq., executive director of The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools. "Earning excellent grades, supporting the community and making an impression on the principal are not easy tasks, but these students did it. They are role models and deserve this opportunity."
About The Carson Scholars Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity founded in 1994 by Johns Hopkins pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson and his wife, Candy.
