Anglers catch plenty of fish despite rough weather

Rough seas and weather associated with Tropical Storm Debby failed to totally foul things up for the Caloosa Catch & Release Tournament last weekend at Captiva Island.

"We've had horrendous weather for the tournament several times before," said tournament director Ron Riley. "The weather was tough, but teams went out and caught a lot of fish. They got beat up pretty good, but I had reports of people catching 15 or 20 redfish each day plus several other species and that's actually better than normal."

Anglers launched and weighed each day's catch at Jensen's Marina. All 23 teams that participated presented redfish at the scales.

"We changed locations of the tournament this year," said Riley. "For being a new venue Jensen's did a phenomenal job for us all weekend."

Team Brandwear topped the final team rankings with 28.54 pounds of the limit two redfish. Team Brandwear outscored runner-up Team FOCUS, which tipped the scales at 24.75 pounds. Team Bahama Breeze, one of the tournament sponsors, placed third with 24.37 pounds.

Team Brandwear consisted of George Patton of Cape Coral, Mike Dykes of Naples and Joe Bryan of Fort Myers.

Team FOCUS members included Richard Marano of North Fort Myers, Brad Harmer of Cape Coral and Jr. Webster of North Fort Myers. Team FOCUS placed first in the mystery fish category with 1.41 pounds of mango snapper.

Members of Team Bahama Breeze were Ray and Ryan Atwood, Michael VanHoose and a fourth unidentified angler, all of Tampa.

The 23rd Caloosa Catch & Release Tournament is the first event in the Caloosa Tournament Series. The second event is the Summer Slam, Sept. 21-22 on Fort Myers Beach, with the Caloosa Grand Championship set for Nov. 2-3.

Anglers who scored legal fish last weekend qualify to compete in the Grand Championship whether they choose to participate in the Summer Slam or not.
