Painting the Town Grey

July 23, 2012
SHANNEN HAYES (shayes@breezenewspapers.com) , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

John Grey began painting in the late 1960s when his parents purchased and refurbished a two-story beachfront hotel on Fort Myers Beach. He even painted his way through college. Today, he owns John Grey Painting a full-service painting and decorating operation now based on Sanibel Island.

"Construction has been a family business for many years," said Grey.

It still remains a family trade with the addition of his two sons, Derrick and Nate, who are equal partners in the business. Derrick manages a crew that consists on average of 16 to 18 painters while Nate handles office duties.

"We enjoy interacting with our customers and providing the best, most efficient service," said Grey.

In addition to painting services, John Grey Painting offers carpentry and drywall including repairs, sheet rock and stucco including repairs, specialty coatings including decorative and protective, decorative wall art, interior design and color consultation.

"If it doesn't move, we can paint it," said Grey.

With a staff that includes interior design and color consultants, craftsmen, tradesmen and formally trained decorative artists and muralists, the company is able to provide the guidance and professional planning necessary to complete any renovation, decorating or painting project.

"Most of our work is by word of mouth and referrals," said Grey. "We are exceedingly lucky to have a business out here and have it grow the way it has throughout the years."

Although it started on Fort Myers Beach, John Grey Painting has extended its services to the Fort Myers, Bonita and Naples communities, as well as the islands. Grey, who still resides on Fort Myers Beach, has served as president of the Sanibel Captiva Rotary Club for the past 2 years and participated in many local non-profit organizations, such as "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), Big Arts, and has been a sponsor of the annual F.I.S.H. 10K race.

"We feel more involved and connected to the community," said Grey, who strives to be a part of the community.

John Grey Painting is located at 695 Tarpon Bay Rd, Sanibel Promenade #5, where it has been for the past 4 years. For more information, call 239-472-0590 or email info@johngreypainting.com.
