A fundraising event is fast approaching to raise funds for the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) in honor of a Southwest Florida boy, Christian Hannett.
The Florida Everblades' annual Golf Tournament & Auction on Oct. 7 at the Colony Golf & Country Club will assist with Hannett's transplant-related expenses.
The family and friends of Christian challenges everyone to ask their neighbors and colleagues to join them to celebrate a miracle kid. Christian was diagnosed with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) days before his 5th birthday in September 2011. MLD is a 1-in-100,000 rare genetic disorder that causes the white matter in the brain, myelin, to disappear.
On Oct. 27, 2011, doctors at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., performed a life-saving bone marrow transplant. The Hannett family needs an estimated $100,000 assist with transplant-related expenses and Christian's continued care.
The scramble format event tees off with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Five player teams, four amateurs paired with a current or former Florida Everblades player or coach, will be paired together for the day.
