Eye-catching photo

November 2, 2012
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

To the Editor,

I wish to commend the Island Reporter and your photographer Carol Orr Hartman for the refreshing, eye catching and unusual front cover photograph of the 10K race for FISH (published on) 10.19.2012.

Normally, one is told to hold the camera steady and don't move. However, because of Carol's professional background and experience she broke that "rule" and "PANNED" the shot creating an unusual picture of the runners frozen in time and the background a moving blur.

This technique is achieved by synchronizing the movement of the runners with the movement of the camera and using a slower shutter speed such as 1/30th of a second. The effect is a "frozen," non-blurred capturing of the runners and a streaky moving background. The result is a picture that catches your attention and makes you look twice, hopefully, making you curious as to how it was done and wanting to read the article.

It is refreshing to see quality pictures being used. Next time you notice one, check out the byline.
