David W. Nelson, MD

Dedicated plastic and reconstructive surgeon, sailor, historian, model railroader and devoted father and grandfather, David W. Nelson, MD, a resident of Captiva Island, died Dec. 16. He was 74.

Predeceased by wife Joyce Ann Nelson, David is survived by life partner Susan Stuart, children Gregg (Jeanette), Andrea, Julie (Brad Wright) and grandchildren Anders and Kristian Nelson, Hunter, Cole and Abby Wright.

Born Feb. 28, 1938, Nelson graduated from St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota Medical School. He served his country as a Naval flight surgeon assigned to the Marine Corps in Vietnam. A lifelong resident of Minnesota he practiced at Methodist Hospital until his retirement and move to Captiva.

A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held at Captiva's historic Chapel By The Sea at 1 p.m. on Jan. 19.
