Island campaign pushes toward goal

The Sanibel-Captiva United Way Campaign is approaching the conclusion for 2012-13 with just four weeks left.

As of Jan. 28, the Sanibel-Captiva Campaign has raised just over $283,578 which is 90 percent of the goal of $315,000.

"We are happy to be at 90 percent of our goal, and a huge thank you to those who have already given," said Tony Lapi of 'Tween Waters Inn and the islands' campaign chair. "Our United Way will wrap up the annual campaign on Feb. 28, and we need everyone's help to reach 100 percent.

"What would happen if we did not make our goal? Our 70 partner agencies would not be fully funded for programs that feed hungry people, protect abused children, and help seniors live independently in their own homes. Let's all join together to make a difference in thousands of lives."

Though there has been a small improvement in the local economy, Lapi adds, thousands of people have been left behind that improvement, and the needs of children, families and seniors have not diminished. United Way 211, the help line for referral to health and human services, took almost 18,000 calls for help a year before the downturn. That number of calls for help has increased each year and totaled 58,000 in 2012.

"I know we can meet the goal!" Lapi said. "But we need your help and the help of your neighbors and local businesses. When times are tough, our community rises to the occasion and helps people who are in need."

Your gift stays in our own community to assist friends and neighbors. F.I.S.H. of Sanibel and the Sanibel United Way House receive funds from our United Way and run wonderful programs for residents of our islands.

"Donate today by returning the pledge card you received in the mail, or by calling (239) 433-2000," said Lapi.

You can also give by visiting the website www.unitedwaylee.org/donate.html.
