Former island worker fights leukemia

Melissa Godfrey, who worked many years at the Lazy Flamingo on Sanibel Island, has been hospitalized and undergoing chemotherapy treatment for acute leukemia.

A fundraiser was held on May 19 in Fort Myers with the proceeds going toward her mounting medical bills. Anyone wishing to still donate to help support her and her family is asked to contact the Sanibel-Captiva Bank at 239-472-6100 where an account has been established under the name Melissa Barnes.

Melissa is described as an amazing mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend with a gentle spirit,warm soul and bright personality. She and her husband, Dave Godfrey, life in Fort Myers with their two children, Ryan, 9, and Madilyn 7.

Two weeks after Melissa and Dave were married in April, Melissa was diagnosed with acute leukemia.
