Sun Splash Family Waterpark will begin its summer schedule today with new park hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, which coincides with the Lee County School District's summer break, will run through Aug. 7.

In addition, the park will host its first Aqua Theatre Night of the season, also on Friday, from 6 to 10 p.m. featuring the movie Soul Surfer as soon as the sun goes down.

But there will also be other fun events going on the entire summer, according to Park Manager Sandra Greiner.

There will be a beach volleyball tournament on June 8 and Sponge Bob will be at the park for Father's Day weekend June 15.

Greiner said the next Aqua Theatre Night will be on June 26 and feature Shrek 3.

"We will be in partnership with the Palm Dinner Theatre, and they will be bringing us Shrek characters for the day," Greiner said.

Aqua Theatre Nights are held the fourth Friday of the month in May, June, and July, and it features a floating white screen that allows people to watch the movie while floating around in the water.

"We have a great sound system and everybody chills out and watches a movie," Greiner said. "The kids are in the pool and the parents grab their chairs and watch from there."

They showcase special evening hours, family friendly movies and discounted prices of $8 for Cape residents, $10 for non-residents, and $5 for same day park. Sun Splash season pass holders are admitted for free.

Overall, Greiner expects this summer to continue the positive momentum Sun Splash has had.

"We started rough with spring break and the cold weather, but we made up for it the past few weeks," Greiner said. "It's been 90 degrees and sunny and we've had field trips for school, even though the park is closed to the public.

Sun Splash, at 400 Santa Barbara Blvd. is the largest waterpark in Southwest Florida and is home to more than 14 acres of pools, slides, tubes, and rides, including three speed slides, a Main Stream River Tube Ride, and a Tot Spot for children.
