Faces on Faith: A great question!

July 18, 2013
By Rev. Dr. DARYL DONOVAN - Senior pastor of Sanibel Community Church , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

The guy had everything! He was rich, powerful, prestigious and young!

He came to Jesus and asked a very important question: "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Sometimes wisdom is reflected better in what we ask rather than in what we think we know.

I'm aware that there are those who don't believe in God and many who believe that this life is all there is, but hopefully folks who have drawn those conclusions have asked the right questions on such important matters.

Atheist scientist Dr. Donald Bierle had believed there was no god and no life after this. In fact, he felt so strongly about it, he sought to disprove Christianity once and for all using scientific method. He was Surprised by Faith (the book telling of his conclusions) and found Biblical faith to be real and reliable.

Lee Strobel, an agnostic investigative journalist, went on a similar journey using his investigative skills to disprove Christianity. In his extensive work, Evidence That Demands a Verdict, he systematically describes how he came into a life-transforming relationship with the resurrected Jesus Christ.

Brilliant author and scholar, C.S. Lewis came to faith in much the same way. He was willing to ask the important questions to consider the facts. After coming to faith he said, "A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. There are traps everywhere - 'Bibles laid open, millions of surprises,' as Herbert says, 'fine nets and stratagems.' God is, if I may say it, very unscrupulous."

I'm not telling anyone what to believe. I'm just asking if you have asked the most important questions. Eternal questions have eternal consequences and seem worthy to me of some finite time to explore them.
