F.I.S.H. hosting fundraiser to upgrade food pantry

The First Annual Go F.I.S.H. fundraising event will help F.I.S.H. of Sanibel upgrade their local food pantry.

John Morse, president of F.I.S.H., said the pantry built in 2010 has outgrown the needs on the island. The fundraising event on Sunday, Feb. 9 from 6-9 p.m. at The Sundial Beach Resort and Spa will help raise funds to upgrade and enlarge the pantry.

"It has grown to the point a redesign is critical to meet the needs of our clients," said Morse. "Contrary to what some might think, we have many households in need on our islands."

The food pantry serves as a local safety net that distributed nearly 75,000 pounds of food last year, and according to Morse that was an increase of 21 percent from 2011 and 60 percent from 2010.

"We are dedicated to reducing the effects that malnutrition has on our community," he said.

The choice pantry is open during the week hours change over the summer months and F.I.S.H. partners with the Harry Chapin Food Bank as well as local businesses to stock up on food, personal hygiene products, and cleaning supplies.
