Ken Burgener has been a Sanibel Recreation Center volunteer for two years. He volunteers with all ages and at special events, and enjoys seeing all of the smiling faces and working with children. When asked how volunteering at the recreation center has impacted his life, Burgener said: "Physical fitness is good both for the body and the mind, and volunteering here keeps me active. I also enjoy seeing my local neighbors using the facility."
Burgener and his wife of seven years, Linda, run a bird watching business which has allowed him to work outside with children for the Florida Audubon, as well as taking thousands of people through the Everglades. Burgener has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida Atlantic University in Environmental Geography. He is an Eagle Scout and is actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America. Burgener loves to travel and has visited all 50 states and many foreign countries.
Volunteer opportunities are available with the Sanibel Recreation Department. For information on joining your friends and neighbors who serve as volunteers, call 472-0345.
