The eighth annual Cape Cops 5K Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run, presented by Fuccillo Kia, will be held Saturday, May 17, at the Cape Coral Yacht Club.

Proceeds from the event will go to assist families of fallen or injured police officers.

Officer Georgeann Lytle said that in the beginning, the run was to benefit the department's "Do The Right thing" program, which rewards school children for good deeds.

For the last four years, it has gone to benefit officers' families throughout Lee County.

"We've raised about $7,000 the last three years through this event, and we always hope to do better than last year," Lytle said. "Last year we had 500 participants, and if we can get that many this year, that would be great."

It is suggested runners pre-register on or before May 16. Youths 18 and under is $15, adults $25, and all race-day entries are $35.
