Lightning is the likely cause of a fire Thursday that destroyed two floors of Sanibel condominiums.
The four units at the Sunset South complex on Middle Gulf Drive were engulfed at about 10:30 p.m., Sanibel Assistant Fire Chief Matt Scott said. Lightning from sharp storms moving across southwest Florida is blamed, Scott said. The units were not occupied. The two upper condos experienced heavy smoke damage, the lower two sustained water damage. No loss value was reported. Firefighters remained on the scene assessing damage and causes until early Friday.
