After a successful inaugural year, the Sanibel Sea School will host an after school cast netting series starting this month for kindergarten through eighth grade students.

Sanibel Sea School Director of Education Nicole Finnicum said the series is open to the public. Both on and off island youth are welcome to attend, as long as adults can provide transportation to the flagship campus.

"Students that attend the Sanibel Rec After School Program can also attend. We will be sending a bus down to pick up the kids from the Rec," she said.

The class will be offered from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. every Tuesday during October.

Each week, depending on the weather, the youngsters will visit a new location to practice their cast netting skills.

"This is really geared to teach kids how to cast net. We think every kid that is growing up in Southwest Florida should know how to throw a cast net. Even if the kids already know how to cast net, we are going to try and hone their skills and make them better at cast netting," Finnicum said.

The four part series builds up to the Esperanza Woodring Memorial Cast Net Rodeo, which will be held Nov. 4. She said their hope is the kids will attend the cast net lessons and then show off their skills at the rodeo in November.

"On the last session we are going to have Ralph Woodring and the crew from the Bait Box come and give the kids some special tips on cast netting," Finnicum said. "That will be exciting."

Those interested can register online at www.sanibelseaschool.org under after school programs. Each class is $20, or $75 for the entire series.

A total of 20 youngsters can sign up for each session.
